You can play a note on your instrument to answer a flashcard, even if your instrument does not sound at concert pitch. For instance, if you play a C on a trumpet in B-flat, the note that comes out would be the pitch of a B-flat on the piano, not a C. Flashnote Derby can take this into account so that your playing is correctly understood.

To set up Flashnote Derby to work with a transposing instrument:

  1. Tap the settings icon at the top of the screen.

  2. From the list of settings, tap Answer Method.

  3. If the answer method is not currently set to Listen mode, select it now.

  4. Below the Listen icon, you will see the instrument that is currently selected for flashcard answering. If this is not your instrument, tap on the instrument name.

  5. Scroll down through the long list of instruments and select the one you are using. If you don't see your instrument, you might be able to select a different instrument that has the same transposition. Or, I might be able to add support for your instrument. Send an e-mail to support@flashnotederby.com if you need help with this step.

  6. Tap on the main note-choosing area to the left to dismiss the settings panel. Flashnote Derby will now correctly interpret the notes you play to answer flashcards.

Info

If you have set up Flashnote Derby with multiple user accounts, the instrument settings will be stored uniquely for each user. This is helpful if you are a teacher and the same device is used by students who play different instruments.

Info

When creating a new user, the instrument for the new user is set to whatever the currently selected user has set. (i.e If you are entering in several users who play the same instrument, you shouldn't have to repeatedly set the instrument for each new user you create.)
